Privacy & Your Questions
What we don't do with your information
- We never sell your data, or rent, trade, or share it with anyone.
- We never share with political parties, candidates, or campaigns — any party, any level.
- We never ask about or record your citizenship, immigration status, or residency status.
- We never display your full name, your full email, or your exact postal code.
- We never contact you about anything other than this campaign — and only if you opted in.
- We never store your data outside Canada beyond what's strictly required for email delivery.
Here's exactly how your signature appears publicly
This is the only thing visible to anyone — your MLA, the Province, a reporter, your neighbour:
Your full last name, email address, exact postal code, and your child's name and grade are never displayed publicly. They aren't shared with anyone outside our coalition, ever.
Your questions, answered
Identity & exposure
1. Will my full name be public?
No. The public list shows only your first name + the first letter of your last name + your child's school + your neighbourhood. For example: "Sarah C., Westridge Elementary, Willingdon Heights".
2. Can my MLA or the Province identify me individually?
No. We only share aggregate counts and the public list (in the form above) with MLAs and reporters — exactly what you see on the website. We do not give individual signers' details to any government office, party, or candidate. Ever.
3. Could my employer, my child's school, or my neighbours figure out it's me?
The public information (first name + last initial + school + neighbourhood) is enough for you to recognize your own listing, but not enough for a stranger to single you out. Unless you tell people, they won't know.
Email & ongoing contact
4. Will I be added to a mailing list that emails me forever?
You will receive one confirmation email — the click that activates your signature.
You will receive ongoing updates only if you check the "send me updates" box on the form. If you check it, you'll get a short update roughly every two weeks (max ~26 emails per year), each with a one-click unsubscribe.
5. Will my email be sold or shared with political parties?
No. Not sold, not rented, not traded, not shared with parties, candidates, other advocacy groups, or commercial partners. This is a written, permanent policy. If you suspect we've broken it, you can complain to the BC Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner at oipc.bc.ca.
Withdraw & security
6. Can I withdraw my signature later?
Yes, immediately and self-serve. Open your personal letter URL (the one you got after confirming your signature, format /letters/<token>) and click Withdraw my signature at the bottom. Your signature row is permanently deleted in real time, and any newsletter subscription is removed automatically.
Lost the URL? Email privacy@fundburnabykids.ca and we delete within 7 days (BC's PIPA law allows up to 30 days; we commit to faster).
7. What happens if there's a data breach?
We use industry-standard encryption and access controls. If a breach occurs, we will notify all affected signers and the BC Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner within 72 hours, as required by PIPA.
8. I gave my child's school and grade — could that expose my child?
The public listing shows the school name only, paired with your neighbourhood (e.g. "Westridge Elementary, Willingdon Heights"). We never publish your child's name, class, or teacher — and we never collect those.
Grade is used internally so we can send you updates relevant to your child's grade level if you opted in. Grade is never shown publicly.
Status, data location, and who's behind this
9. I'm not a Canadian citizen / I'm a permanent resident / I'm on a work permit. Will signing affect my status?
No. We do not ask about, collect, or record your citizenship or immigration status. You are eligible to participate if you live in Burnaby and have a child in the SD41 school district.
10. Where is my data stored? Will it leave Canada?
Your name, school, and neighbourhood are stored on a server in the Vancouver area (Supabase, ca-central-1 region). Your email address is held by Buttondown, a US-based email service — this is industry-standard (Gmail and Outlook are also US-based). We never proactively transfer your data to other countries.
11. How do you make sure fake signatures aren't added to the count?
Three things: email confirmation, bot blocking, and device record. Full methodology page →
12. Who is Ben? How is this campaign funded?
Ben Zhou is a Burnaby parent who founded this advocacy coalition. Operating costs are paid out of his own pocket: the domain (~$30/year) and email service (~$10/month). The website itself, all development, and ongoing maintenance are donated volunteer work. No one is paid. No commercial revenue. No political party funding.

Who we are
Fund Burnaby Kids is a campaign of Burnaby Kids First, a parent-led advocacy coalition founded by Ben Zhou. Our mailing address is (Mailing address being established - full address available before public launch). Privacy inquiries: privacy@fundburnabykids.ca.
What we collect
First name, last name (only the first letter is kept; the rest is dropped at submission), email address (kept only until you click the confirmation link, then immediately deleted), your child's school, your child's grade, and your postal code (used at submission to derive your neighbourhood and provincial riding, then dropped — the postal code itself is never written to our database). Governed by BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
Note: Netlify Forms (the form-submission service we use) retains the raw form payload for 30 days before auto-purging. During those 30 days the raw email and full postal code exist on Netlify's servers, accessible only by Ben. Email privacy@fundburnabykids.ca to request earlier purge.
Technical data for fraud prevention
When you submit a signature, we record your IP address (the address of the device you signed from) and the IP address used to confirm the signature when you click the email link. These are used solely to detect coordinated fraudulent submissions.
These are deleted 90 days after the petition closes. They are never displayed publicly or shared with third parties. They exist for one purpose: so we can defend the integrity of the signature count if challenged.
